Hoploscaphites landesi was named by Riccardi (1983). Its type specimen is GSC 5342a, a shell, and it is a mold. Its type locality is GSC Loc. 97988, South Sask. River [Bearpaw Fm], which is in a Campanian marine shale in the Bearpaw Shale Formation of Canada.
