Eothinites was named by Ruzhencev (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon]. It is not extant. Its type is Eothinites kargalensis.
It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Eothinitidae by Leonova (1989) and Korn (2006); and to Eothinitinae by Leonova (2002), Furnish et al. (2009) and Zhou (2017).
