Mesoclymenia was named by Bogoslovsky (1981) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1042]. Its type is Mesoclymenia nalivkinae.

It was assigned to Costaclymeniidae by Bogoslovsky (1981); to Clymeniida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gonioclymeniidae by Korn (2006).
