Stearoceras was named by Hyatt (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: C Bash-u C Mosc-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Grypoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Miao et al. (2019).
