Taxonomy
Palaeaster clarki was named by Clarke and Swartz (1913). Its type specimen is at the Maryland Geological Survey and is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Clarkeaster.

It was recombined as Mesopalaeaster clarki by Schuchert (1915); it was recombined as Clarkeaster clarki by Blake (2018).
