Euchondria cooperi was named by Newell and Boyd (1995). Its type specimen is USNM 431319 and is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is USNM706e, Hess Canyon, Glass Mountains, which is in a Roadian marine limestone in the Word Formation of Texas.
