Umpquaia was named by Turner (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. Its type is Umpquaia oregonensis.

It was assigned to Buccinidae by Turner (1938); to Cominellinae by Givens and Kennedy (1976); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
