It was assigned to Cathartidae by Hay (1902); to Vulturidae by Hay (1930); to Accipitridae by Lambrecht (1933); and to Aegypiinae by Howard (1932), Miller and Compton (1939), Wetmore (1940) and Wetmore (1956).
