Hauffiosaurus zanoni

Taxonomy
Hauffiosaurus zanoni was named by O'Keefe (2001). Its type specimen is Hauff Museum, a skeleton (complete skeleton), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Holzmaden, epsilon II/4, non-specific collection data, which is in a Falciferum marine horizon in the Posidonia Shale Formation of Germany. It is the type species of Hauffiosaurus.

Vincent 2011A moderately sized (3.4 m) pliosauroid with the following autapomorphy: ilium as long as the pubis, and longer than the ischium; and with the following unique combination of characters: an elongate rostrum, vomers not extending far posteriorly beyond the internal nares; a lateral palatal fenestra; no suborbital fenestra; an ectopterygoid boss contacting the jugal and the posterior part of the maxilla; no anterior interpterygoid vacuity; palatines not in contact with the internal nares; braincase in ventral view showing a concave area surrounded laterally and posteriorly by two excrescences projecting ventrally; seven premaxillary teeth; teeth ornamented with a series of longitudinal enamel ridges; 30 or 31 cervical vertebrae; short and wide limb girdles; median border of the pubis straight, forming an almost orthogonal angle with the anterior border; ischia short compared to width; ilium long, flat, only slightly twisted; anterior border of the humerus straight and shorter than femur; epipodials longer than wide; two supplementary bones in each paddle, the most proximal located between the distal margin of the ulna/fibula and the proximal margin of the ulnare/calcaneum, the most distal one located just posterior to the first, close to the postaxial margin of the ulnare/calcaneum
