Merycodus warreni

Taxonomy
Cervus warreni was named by Leidy (1858). Its type specimen is USNM 149 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Crookston Bridge Quarry, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Valentine Formation of Nebraska. It is the type species of Meryceros.

It was synonymized subjectively with Dicrocerus necatus by Cope (1875); it was synonymized subjectively with Merycodus necatus by Hay (1902), Matthew (1904) and Forsten (1970); it was recombined as Meryceros warreni by Frick (1937), Skinner and Taylor (1967) and Honey and Izett (1988); it was recombined as Merycodus warreni by Gregory (1942), Galbreath (1953), Voorhies (1990) and Janis and Manning (1998).

Synonyms
  • Meryceros nenzelensis was named by Frick (1937). Its type specimen is F:AM 32174, a partial skull (Partial skull with heavy, branching horn without burr), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Nenzel Quarry, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Valentine Formation of Nebraska.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Merycodus warreni by Voorhies (1990).
