Taxonomy
Cuon dubius was named by Teilhard de Chardin (1940). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Huiyu, Mentougou, which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in China.
It was recombined as Sinicuon dubius by Qiu et al. (2004) and Wang et al. (2015); it was recombined as Xenocyon dubius by Wang et al. (2008), Mecozzi et al. (2020) and Bartolini-Lucenti and Spassov (2022).
