Barytherioidea was named by Simpson (1945). It is not extant. It was considered paraphyletic by Gheerbrant et al. (2002).

It was assigned to Proboscidea by Carroll (1988), Gheerbrant et al. (2002); and to Proboscidea by Simpson (1945), Sanders et al. (2010).
