Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
D. R. Prothero et al. 2023(modified from Honey et al. 1998, p. 446) Low skull with a long narrow almost cylindrical rostrum, which is straight and parallel-sided from the front to about P2, then begins to flare widely between P2 to the level of M3, where the rostrum is more than twice the width of the anterior snout. I1-3 large, subequal in size and caniniform, and spaced along the lateral margin of the palate with diastemata between them. Canine is variable in size, either smaller or larger than I3, and separated by a diastema from P1. P1 variably present because it might be a retained dP1, and when present, separated from P2 by a long diastema. P2-4 relatively small with simple crowns, decreasing in anteroposterior length towards the P4 (unusual for camelids). Brachydont upper molars with a quadrate shape, with prominent parastyles, mesostyles, and metastyles, and distinct lingual intercolumnar tubercles. Like all camelids, it has an inflated auditory bulla filled with cancellous bone, and divided by a tympanohyal pit and groove. Steep occiput with prominent sagittal and lambdoid crests. Postorbital bar incomplete. Lower canine is small, and separated from p1 by a diastema longer than the length of m1-2. The p2 is longer anteroposteriorly than p4, and separated from p3 by a diastema that is shorter than the length of m3. The p3-4 are small, with p4 smaller than p3. Brachydont lower molars with low elongated intercolumnar tubercles. The m3 hypoconulid divided into lingual and labial selenes. (Most of these features are known only from the type species, because the remaining species are known only from lower jaw fragments or isolated teeth).
