Percrocuta was named by Kretzoi (1938). Its type is Hyaena carnifex.
It was assigned to Hyaeninae by Hendey (1974); to Hyaenidae by Qiu and Cao (1988), Carroll (1988); and to Percrocutidae by Pickford et al. (2000), Werdelin and Peigne (2010).
