Paraprionosaurus was named by Gilmore (1938). It is not extant. Its type is Paraprionosaurus wyomingensis.

It was assigned to Sauria by Gilmore (1938); to Lacertilia by Estes (1983); and to Lacertilia by Carroll (1988).
