Taxonomy
Sclerosaurus was named by von Meyer (1857). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Sclerosauridae.

It was assigned to Sclerosaurinae by Nopcsa (1928); to Procolophoninae by Colbert (1946); to Sclerosauridae by Kuhn (1966), Kuhn (1971), Carroll (1988); to Pareiasauroidea by Lee (1995), Lee (1997); and to Leptopleuroninae by Sues and Reisz (2008).
