Isognomon was named by Lightfoot (1786) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn R Sepkoski's reference number: 94]. It is extant. Its type is Ostrea isognomon.
It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Isognomidae by Repin (2013) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014); and to Isognomonidae by Vokes (1980), Moore (1983), Kensley and Pether (1986), Ward (1992), Chiesa et al. (1995), Lamprell and Healy (1998), Frassinetti and Covacevich (1999), Matsubara (2002), Spencer et al. (2004), Lazo and Damborenea (2011) and Hickman (2023).
