Type specimens:

  • Toxochelys latiremis: AMNH 2362, a mandible (jaw fragment and coracoid). Its type locality is Niobrara River (Sheridan County), which is in a Miocene terrestrial horizon in Nebraska.
  • Porthochelys browni: AMNH 6080, a skull (skull & mandible). Its type locality is 20 miles southeast of Edgemont, which is in a Campanian marine shale in South Dakota.
  • Toxochelys barberi: FM P27047, a shell (carapace with about half of elements preserved).
  • Toxochelys brachyrhinus: KU 1212, a skull. Its type locality is Niobrara deposits (Toxochelys brachyrhinus type locality), which is in a Cretaceous marine chalk in Kansas.
  • Toxochelys serrifer: AMNH 1835, a partial skeleton (partial skull (maxillae, dentary, pterygoids, right quadrate, frontals, prefrontals) and two peripheral plates). Its type locality is Niobrara River (coll. Merrill 1865), which is in a Miocene terrestrial horizon in the Loop Fork Formation of Nebraska.
  • Toxochelys weeksi: UT K20, a partial shell (incomplete plastron and a few peripherals).

Ecology: aquatic omnivore

• Miocene of United States (1: Nebraska collection)

• Cretaceous of Canada (4: Manitoba), United States (3: Alabama, Kansas)

Total: 8 collections each including a single occurrence
