Porpites Community, Scotch Grove Formation, eastern Iowa (Silurian of the United States)

Where: Iowa (42.0° N, 92.0° W: paleocoordinates 22.6° S, 54.2° W)

• coordinate based on political unit

• basin-level geographic resolution

When: Buck Creek Quarry Member (Scotch Grove Formation), Wenlock (433.4 - 427.4 Ma)

• Buck Creek Quarry member, "probable early to middle Wenlockian age."

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deep subtidal ramp; dolomitic, shelly/skeletal lime mudstone and dolomitic, shelly/skeletal wackestone

• "community flourished best in muddy carbonate substrates, and the name bearer becomes less abundance in more skeletal-rich lithologies...community interpreted [as] below normal wave base, and generally below storm reach...BA 4 or BA 3-4..."
• "occurs in skeletal mudstone to wackestone fabrics (dolomitized or silicified), and no grain abrasion or evidence of winnowing is observed..."

Collection methods: Includes taxa listed (with abundances) in table 50.9 as well as others mentioned in text.
