Balde de Leyes (Norian, Quebrada del Barro) (Triassic to of Argentina)

Where: San Juan, Argentina (31.6° S, 67.4° W: paleocoordinates 39.8° S, 29.7° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Quebrada del Barro Formation (Marayes Group), Norian to Norian (228.0 - 201.3 Ma)

• A recent stratigraphic revision (Martinez et al., 2013 (ref. 58021)- supplementary information) proposes that the upper horizon of the Quebrada del Barro containing Leyasaurus marayensis should be classified as a separate stratigraphic unit from the other (lower) horizons of the Quebrada del Barro. The other horizons are assigned to Norian age based on Sphenotitan leyasi occurring in the same horizons as several other Triassic-affinity species. These other species are known from the Norian Los Colorados Fm., which was recently dated using magnetostratigraphy.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: alluvial fan; red sandstone and siltstone

• "The Quebrada del Barro Formation is characterized by a bright reddish succession of coarse sandstone and conglomerate interlaid with fine clay-rich mudstone characterized by isolated granules and calcisol development."

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: quarrying, mechanical,
