Taxonomy
Australopithecus ramidus was named by White et al. (1994). Its type specimen is ARA-VP-6/1, a set of teeth (associated set of teeth that includes upper left I1, C, P3, P4, right I1, C (broken), P4, M2, and lower right P3 and P4), and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Middle Awash - Aramis mbr., which is in a Zanclean fluvial-lacustrine horizon in the Sagantole Formation of Ethiopia.
It was recombined as Ardipithecus ramidus by White et al. (1995), Cela-Conde and Ayala (2003) and Grehan and Schwartz (2009).
