Palmatolepis playfordi was named by Klapper (2007) [= Polygnathus sp. nov. B of Druce 1976, p. 206, pi. 84, fig. 5.
= Palmatolepis n. sp. of Johnson & Klapper 1992, p. 132, fig. 2.
= Palmatolepis n. sp. N of Klapper 1995, table 5.]. Its type specimen is GSWA F51387, a set of teeth, and it is a 3D body fossil.
