Lycideops was named by Broom (1931). It is not extant. Its type is Lycideops longiceps. It is the type genus of Lycideopsidae.
It was assigned to Lycideopsidae by Carroll (1988); and to Lycideopidae by Sigurdsen et al. (2012).
