Lemurosaurus was named by Broom (1949). Its type is Lemurosaurus pricei.
It was assigned to Ictidorhinidae by Boonstra (1952), Carroll (1988) and Sigogneau-Russell (1989); to Biarmosuchia by Sidor and Rubidge (2006); and to Burnetiamorpha by Sidor and Welman (2003), Rubidge et al. (2006), Smith et al. (2006), Sidor and Smith (2007) and Kammerer (2016).
