It was assigned to Pelycosauria by Reisz (1986); to Pelycosauria by Carroll (1988); to Varanopseidae by Dilkes and Reisz (1996); to Mycterosaurinae by Modesto et al. (2001); to Varanodontinae by Maddin et al. (2006); and to Afrothyra by Spindler et al. (2018).
