Etymology: species name from the name of the locality: Phu Din Daeng in Thai, red rock mountain or hill.

Taxonomy
Protoshachemys rubra was named by Tong et al. (2019). Its type specimen is PRC81, a partial shell (a nearly complete but disarticulated shell, including complete nuchal, one neural, suprapygal 1 (incomplete), suprapygal 2, pygal (lacking posterior portion), r), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Phu Din Daeng, which is in a Barremian terrestrial siltstone in the Sao Khua Formation of Thailand. It is the type species of Protoshachemys.
