Taxonomy
Sternotherus palaeodorus was named by Bourque and Schubert (2015). Its type specimen is ETMNH 13912, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Gray Fossil Site, which is in a Hemphillian/Blancan sinkhole siltstone/conglomerate in Tennessee.

Schubert 2015Nuchal with slight to no contact with N1 (extant species of Sternotherus exhibit minimal to extensive contact with the exception of Sternotherus odoratus which lacks contact); V1 wide anteriorly (18–26% carapace length, mean »21%, n D 4) and broadly pointed to roundly squared posteriorly at the V1–2 sulcus (shared with S. odoratus and Kinosternon) V1 overlaps onto P1 (in rare instances V1 may contact P1 in some S. odoratus, but V1 does not overlap P1 in extant Sternotherus); V2–4 broader than long; cervical scale not reduced or constricted and with a relatively anteroposteriorly long visceral scale margin (shared with S. odoratus and Kinosternon; the cervical is typically more reduced in Sternotherus carinatus, Sternotherus depressus, and the Sternotherus minor complex); seven neurals present (six in extant Sternotherus), with the first four posteriorly symmetrically short-sided (shared with some S. odoratus; the first three are posteriorly short-sided in most extant Sternotherus examined); single medial keel present on the carapace (faint anteriorly to midway and becoming most prominent posteriorly); costal carination absent; anterior musk duct terminus situated on the M2–3 sulcus and nearly contacts or contacts the edge of the carapace (shared with S. odoratus, S. depressus, and Sternotherus minor peltifer); epiplastron anteroposteriorly elongate, approximately 26% carapace length (shared with Sternotherus minor minor and S. m. peltifer, as well as Kinosternon skullridgescens, Kinosternon pojoaque, Kinosternon angustipons, and Kinosternon dunni) and with or without a cusp along the outer gular–anterior humeral margin; intergular scute relatively large for the genus (length D »8% carapace length and width D »12% carapace length [n D 1]; »9–11% plastron length [n D 2]) (shared with K. pojoaque, K. angustipons, and K. dunni; this scute is more diminutive in other Sternotherus and absent in S. carinatus and some S. minor); transverse epi-hyoplastral suture relatively straight, not significantly curved; plastral forelobe highly kinetic; axillary notch of the hyoplastron narrow (<10% carapace length) (shared with the S. minor complex and S. depressus; this notch is wider [10% carapace length] in S. odoratus and S. carinatus); hypoplastron with posteriorly extensive sutural contact with P7 (shared with Kinosternon; contact is highly reduced in extant Sternotherus); inguinal musk duct orifice located well onto P7 (»7.4–7.5) (shared with Xenochelys, most Kinosternon, and slightly more posterior than S. m. peltifer and S. carinatus; this pit is located on P6 in other Sternotherus); anal scute elongate (»22% CL [n D 1]) (shared with most Kinosternon; longer than extant Sternotherus) and lobate along the posterior-most margin; lack of developed femoral-anal scute notch.
