Spathognathodus hungaricus was named by Kozur and Mostler (1970).
It was recombined as Neospathodus hungaricus by Tian (1983); it was recombined as Triassospathodus hungaricus by Kozur (1998), Kolar-Jurkovšek et al. (2013) and Kolar-Jurkovšek et al. (2017).
