Taxonomy
Phosphorosaurus was named by Dollo (1889).

It was synonymized subjectively with Plioplatecarpus by Russell (1967).

It was assigned to Halisaurinae by Mateus et al. (2012), Konishi et al. (2016) and Driscoll et al. (2019); and to Halisaurini by Longrich et al. (2021).
