Staurotypidae was named by Gray (1869). It is extant. Its type is Staurotypus.

It was reranked as the subfamily Staurotypinae by Kuhn (1966), Hutchison (1991) and van Dijk et al. (2014).

It was assigned to Chelydroidea by Baur (1893); to Chelydridae by Kuhn (1966); and to Kinosternidae by Hutchison (1991) and van Dijk et al. (2014).
