Lipeon Formation, interval18, Arroyo de los Tomates section (Silurian to of Argentina)

Also known as Heterorthella Association

Where: Argentina (24.0° S, 65.0° W: paleocoordinates 49.3° S, 128.8° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Lipeon Formation, Wenlock to Wenlock (433.4 - 423.0 Ma)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; bioturbated, ferruginous, micaceous, gray siltstone and sandstone

• "offshore, quiet water, below wave base. Dark color and pyritic concretions suggest periodic restrictions in oxygen. Zoophycos may reflect muddy bottom rich in organics and partly anoxic. Sandstone beds toward the top indicate shallower, nearshore encironment affected by wave base." BA 3 according to Boucot et al. (1999-PBDB ref. 7007).
• Lipeon Formation ranges in thickness from 600 to 800 m. It consists of a monotonous sequence of fine-grained sandstones and siltstones. The lower half of the unit is composed of yellowish, fine-grained, micaceous sandstones...Near the base are several hematitic beds...Ferruginous concretions throughout the formation...extensive bioturbation...trace fossils common. The upper half [relevant here] consists of about 350 m of bioturbated, dark gray, micaceous siltstones. The lower part of this member is richly fossiliferous. Toward the top of the formation there is a progressive increase in the percentage of sands, and discrete sandstone beds are interbedded with the siltstones. These beds show occasional flaser bedding and small-scale ripple cross lamination."

Collection methods: Interval 18, Table 6.
