Xingjiawan Fauna (Miocene of China)

Where: Gansu, China (36.5° N, 103.3° E: paleocoordinates 36.4° N, 101.8° E)

When: Late/Upper Miocene (11.6 - 5.3 Ma)

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; lithified, medium-grained, red, muddy, sandy mudstone

• The fossils were found in the reddish sediment that shows variable grain size from mud- stone to mediuml-grained sandstone. The rich sandstone and more reddish color compared with those from Linxia Basin, suggest a more humid environment (more water reconstruction and stronger oxidation of sediment) than that of the Linxia Basin, consistent with its faunal composition.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
