Canjuers-Les Bessons quarry (micronatum biozone) (Jurassic of France)

Also known as C. corallestris type site

Where: Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France (43.7° N, 6.4° E: paleocoordinates 34.7° N, 15.6° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: mucronatum ammonoid zone, Early/Lower Tithonian (150.8 - 145.0 Ma)

• unnamed limestone bed, "Portlandian", mucronatum ammonite zone

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lagoonal; lime mudstone and fine, carbonaceous mudstone

• "deposited in an environment of very weak atoll lagoon, at the heart of a reef zone"; "an obrutionary stagnation deposit"
• "very regularly layered lithographic limestone"; "homogenous…no coarse grains, joint or vesicles are present. They exhibit conchoidal fractures and sharp edges, and are smooth to the touch." Each bed has three layers: "a basal lamina…composed of a very pure, fine microbe…an intermediate normal-graded mudstone level…with grain size decreasing from fine-grained carbonate mudstone at the base to very fine-grained carbonate mudstone at the top…a new lamina…of fine micrite carbonate similar to the basal lamina."

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: adpression

Collected by Ghirardi family, MNHN crews in 1960s–1970s, 1983–1993, 2010–2011; reposited in the MNHN

Collection methods: salvage, quarrying, surface (in situ), mechanical,
