Pyramids Cave (M-89) (Pleistocene of Australia)

Where: Victoria, Australia (37.4° S, 148.2° E: paleocoordinates 37.5° S, 148.2° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Late/Upper Pleistocene (0.1 - 0.0 Ma)

• Hope (1973) dated the Pyramids Cave red fraction at sometime older than the oldest date for the Clogg's Cave deposit (approximately 6.5 kilometres away and which is now known to be 22,980 + 2,000 Y.B.P.; Flood, 1974), based on rodent material from several cave localities in the Buchan area. She suggested that there is sufficient reason to imply that there was a real difference in age due to the differences between the faunas and their distinctive nature. Further, Hope (1973) compares Wakefield's rodent frequencies to the other deposits and found them 'remarkably consistent' through time. Dating based on relative proportions of extinct and modern taxa suggests a minimum date of greater than 40,000 Y.B.P.
