C5 blue marls, Sougraigne (Cretaceous of France)

Where: Aude, France (42.9° N, 2.4° E: paleocoordinates 31.6° N, 4.7° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Montagne des Cornes Formation, Late/Upper Santonian (85.8 - 83.5 Ma)

• The stratigraphic section is exposed along the road from Sougraigne to Les Croutets/Cloutets. All specimens originate from the third layer of blue marls located

•approximately 10 m below the VCS limestone level, noted R2-C5BR on the local geological map (Quillan map 1070, 1/50 000), at the top of the marls F5a. The layer, 40 cm thick, can be followed laterally for 4 m; its corresponds to yellow marls that contains Inoceramus Sowerby, 1814 and chalky shell ammonite remains, as well as some isolated shark teeth (X.V. pers. obs.).

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, blue marl

Size class: macrofossils

• Platecarpus sp. (left jugal; posterior half of a right squamosal; basioccipital; exoccipital part of a right opisthotic-exoccipital complex; fragmentary right pterygoid; fragmentary left pterygoid; posterior half of a right coronoid; twelve marginal and seven pterygoid teeth; left atlas neural arch; axis; incomplete cervical vertebra C4; incomplete cervical vertebra C5; anterior dorsal vertebra; three eroded anterior dorsal vertebrae; two incomplete posterior dorsal vertebrae; three eroded intermediate caudal vertebrae; left scapula; fragmentary left scapula; phalanx).

•Tylosaurus sp. (two dorsal vertebrae; ventral portion of a right ilium; right pubis; fragmentary left pubis; distal epiphysis of a right femur)

Collection methods: surface (in situ), mechanical,

• UP, Universite de Poitiers, Poitiers, France.

•All specimens have been prepared at the technical laboratory of the PALEVOPRIM (University of Poitiers) and of the CR2P (MNHN, Paris). They were cleaned with a diluted formic acid solution as well as, for some of them, diluted hydrogen peroxide, in order to remove the matrix. All specimens were measured using a caliper and photographed at the CR2P laboratory (MNHN, Paris).
