East of Arraitza village, Ilundain Marls, level ARR1.1 (Eocene of Spain)

Where: Spain (42.8° N, 1.8° W: paleocoordinates 40.9° N, 5.0° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Ilundain Marls Formation, Bartonian (41.3 - 38.0 Ma)

Environment/lithology: deep subtidal; silty marl

• the Arraitza outcrop may correspond to somewhat deeper environments. The fine-grained nature of the marl, the absence of sediment gravity-flow deposits and the absence of light-dependant organisms suggest that the Arraitza deposits accumulated in a flat, aphotic seabed located well below storm-wave base. This interpretation is supported by the foraminiferal content.
• silty marls

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
