Fontllonga 3 (Paleocene of Spain)

Also known as Fontllonga-3

Where: Cataluña, Spain (42.0° N, 0.8° E: paleocoordinates 34.9° N, 0.1° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Unit 2 Member (Tremp Formation), Danian (66.0 - 61.6 Ma)

• Domingo et al. 2007: The Fontllonga-3 site belongs to the Tremp Formation which constitutes the last infilling episode of the Cretaceous basin. The Fontllonga-3 site is located near the top of Unit 2 of the Tremp Formation (Galbrun et al., 1993; Fig. 2).

•If Danian, it is unlikely to belong to "Unit 2."

•Earliest Danian, magnetochron C29r

•Galbrun et al. 1993 place this in Unit 2, beneath Unit 3 (= Vallcebre Limestone).

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: estuary or bay; gray marl and red siltstone

• Domingo et al. 2007: It is a lenticular clay bed interpreted as an ox-bow lake fill, intercalated in the uppermost part of a thickening upward sequence of channelled sandstone bodies, up to 15 m thick, which shows lateral accretion (point bar structure) and sigmoidal stratification, indicating tidal influences. This sandstone unit can be correlated across the 30 km wide Ager syncline and has been interpreted as an upper estuary deposit (Álvarez-Sierra et al., 1994; López-Martínez et al., 1998). the Fontllonga-3 site experienced a warm, seasonally dry climate during the early Paleocene.
• a grey marl intercalated in reddish sandstones

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
