Dampier Limestone, Broadhurst Bight (Pleistocene of Australia)

Where: Western Australia, Australia (25.5° S, 113.5° E: paleocoordinates 25.5° S, 113.5° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Dampier Limestone Formation, Late/Upper Pleistocene (0.1 - 0.0 Ma)

• AGE: Logan et al. (1970) assigned the Dampier Limestone an informal "middle" Pleistocene age from evidence of its contact relationships with older and younger unit; this assignment was follwed by Butcher et al. (1984), Hocking et al. (1987), van de Fraaf et al. (1983) and Denman et al. (1985). The present publication (Kendrick 1990) reassigns the Dampier Limestone to the Late Pleistocene. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: Lower 0.3 m of richly fossiliferous shelly limestone within a 1 m thick section. STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: The Dampier Limestone is capped nbby a strong calcrete layer, and is further overlain by a well-cemented thin, shelly-coralline rubble, possibly correlated to the Bibra Limestone. The Dampier Limestone unconformably overlies the Peron Sandstone.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal, brown, calcareous sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Not clearly stated but possibly a reduced circulation, embayment with seagrass flora (A. trapezia's preferred environment).
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Pale-brown, well-sorted, quartzose calcarenite with a a rather weak, micritic cement. LITHIFICATION: Poorly-lithified as stated to be weakly cemented, and figured specimens show matrix still adhered to relatively well preserved specimens.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: original aragonite, original calcite
