Siemien section (3.30-3.90 m), Poland (Eocene of Poland)

Also known as 3.30-3.90

Where: Poland (51.2° N, 22.6° E: paleocoordinates 49.7° N, 17.7° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Bartonian (41.3 - 38.0 Ma)

• SPECIFIC STRATIGRAPHY: Collection froms horizon between 3.3 and 3.9 m below top of section. Deposits are less than 10 m thick in total, overlain by Quaternary sands, and overlying Maastrictian sediments.

•AGE: Assigned to Bartonian on the basis of similarity of faunal assemblage to Bartonian of England. Furthermore, analysis of planktonic foraminifers shows the unit to be the Globigerapsis semiinvolute Zone, that is in the lower part of the Upper Eocene, and on the basis of coccoliths to be in the Discoaster nodifer biozone, that is uppermost Middle and lowermost Upper Eocene.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; glauconitic, shelly/skeletal, gray, green, silty, calcareous sandstone

• The Upper Eocene sequence is represented by transgressive marine series. Most taxa occupy neritic and littoral and warm-temperate conditions. Numerous corals suggest normal salinity. Probably accumulaed in 10-90 m of water depth.
• Green-grey marly sands with glauconite and pelecypod fragments.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: original aragonite, original calcite

Collection methods: Macrofauna are housed in the Geological Instiutute (IG) of Poland.
