Location 38, Rio Cassaya area (Gatuncillo Formation) - Woodring (1957) (Eocene of Panama)

Also known as USGS 17166

Where: Panama (9.2° N, 79.7° W: paleocoordinates 6.7° N, 77.4° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Gatuncillo Formation, Late/Upper Eocene (37.2 - 33.9 Ma)

• Partly silicified sandy limestone. The maximum thickness of the formation here reaches 800 m. Fine-grained rocks (mudstone and siltstone) make up the bulk of the formation. Limestone, bentonic mudstone, sandstone, and conglomerate are minor constituents. The limestones are algal and foraminiferal na dmost have a thickness less than 1 meter,

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lithified, sandy, cherty/siliceous limestone

• Carbonate facies. No further paleoenvironmental information provided.
• Partly silicified sandy limestone.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: replaced with silica

Reposited in the USNM

Collection methods: quarrying,

• Collected by Stewart (1948), also collections by Thomson (1948) and Woodring (1949). Material is also held (but not specified for any specific collection) at Stanford University, Acad. Nat. Sci. Phil., Corenell University, PRI, U. Cal. and Cal. Acad. Sci.
