Point Flinders - Glen Aire Clay (Oligocene of Australia)

Also known as Assemblage 5; FL 19

Where: Victoria, Australia (38.8° S, 143.5° E: paleocoordinates 55.9° S, 141.2° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Glen Aire Clay Formation, Early/Lower Oligocene (33.9 - 28.4 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From Glen Aire Clay. Outcrop is not good and stratigraphical relationships of the outcrop are not clear owing to slipping and covering sediment. Glen Aire Clay regionally overlies the Castle Cove Limestone, which in turn overlies the Browns Creek Clay. AGE: The age of the assemblage is probably Early Oligocene (Abele et al. 19876), though previous writers (Darragh 1987) have tended to regard the lower Glen Aire Clay as latest Eocene. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From lower Glen Aire Clay.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; shelly/skeletal, gray claystone

• ENVIRONMENT: Environment not reported in text.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Dark grey, richly fossiliferous clay. LITHIFICATION: Unknown lithification.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: COLLECTOR: Probably multiple collectors from same locality, including the author, and combination with existing museum collections. REPOSITORY: Museum of Victoria.
