Gemsmättli Mbr, Kieselkalk Fm - Breiterberg, Vorarlberg (Cretaceous of Austria)

Where: Austria (47.4° N, 9.9° E: paleocoordinates 33.9° N, 19.7° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Gemsmättli Member (Kieselkalk Formation), Valanginian (139.8 - 132.9 Ma)

• LITHOSTRATIGRAPHY: From the Gemsmattli Mbr of the Kieselkalk Formation. AGE: Based on ammonite biostratigraphy the collection is assigned a stratigraphic range from Upper Valanginian (olcostphanids (radiatus zone)) to the basal Lower Hauterivian (Breistrofferia species). As from lower part of formation the collection is assigned to the Valanginian to avoid orphaning. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From base of formation.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lithified, shelly/skeletal limestone

• ENVIRONMENT: Considered to be boreal or temperate. Abundance of ammonites suggests environments that were bathymetrically deeper than those of nerineaceans, anthozoans, etc.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Condensated and highly fossiliferous, lithified (as many specimens are internal moulds). Presumably from chalk facies. LITHIFICATION: Lithified based on facies description and taphonomic comments.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression

Reposited in the MNHN

Collection methods: surface (float),

• COLLECTORS: H.A. Kollmann and historic authors (notably Vacek, 1879, Baumberger and Fussenegger, 1933, and Heim et al. 1934). REPOSITORY: Collections reposited in the Vorarlberger Naturschau, Geologische Bundesantalt, Bayerische Staatssammulung fur Geologie und Palaontologie, Hungarian Geological Survey, and Museum National d'Historie Naturelle, Paris.
