When: Madumabisa Formation, Capitanian to Capitanian (264.3 - 252.2 Ma)
• Bond (1954) thought that the beds could be correlated with similar beds in Zimbabwe assigned to the Tapinocephalus zone. Barbolini et al. (2016) gave a Lopingian age to the Madumabisa Formation on the basis of palynomorphs, with the underlying Gwembe coal dated as Wordian-Capitanian. Olroyd et al. (2018) correlated the lower Madumabisa Formation to Tapinocephalus zone or possibly the Eodicynodon zone on the basis of vertebrates shared with deposits in Tanzania. The stratigraphic position of the bivalve fauna within the Madumabisa Shales is unknown, and it seems that the unit spans a long time range.
