Karcher quarry, Lorentzen (Triassic of France)

Where: France (49.0° N, 7.2° E: paleocoordinates 13.9° N, 17.9° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Calcaire à Entroques Formation, Illyrian (247.2 - 242.0 Ma)

• Late Anisian, late Illyrian, upper Muschelkalk. The earliest ceratite recovered from the upsection Calcaire à Ceratites in the Lorentzen quarry is a specimen attributed to Ceratites transgressor, a species indicative of the late Anisian (late Illyrian) upper robustus biozone (Urlichs 2009). The most common ceratite in the Lorentzen quarry is C. evolutus, index of the evolutus biozone which is still of late Illyrian age. This data corresponds with the general Upper Muschelkalk stratigraphy in East France and the upper boundary of the Calcaire à Entroques in the lower robustus or pulcher biozones (Duringer and Hagdorn 1987). Hence, the new echinoid from an unidentified bed within the Calcaire à Entroques is older than upper robustus biozone and younger than Middle Muschelkalk and thus of Middle Triassic (late Anisian, late Illyrian) age.
