• Although formation has been called Silurian based on sedimentological criteria, vertebrates suggest Lower Devonian, even Late Lower Devonian, age.

Environment/lithology: marginal marine; shale and black limestone

• Based on fauna, authors infer tidal marsh environment.
• "Near top of [Kirusillas Formation, which consists of grey to black lutites] are intercalations of green lutites and grey-green sandstone layers which mark the transition to the Catavi Formation. The latter is a 456 m. thick succession of lutites and lenses of black limestone with cone-in-cone structures. The bone-bed described herein has been found in the upper part of this formation."
