Varese Echinoid (Jurassic of Italy)

When: Late/Upper Pliensbachian (189.6 - 183.0 Ma)

Environment/lithology: offshore shelf; red lime mudstone and red marl

• A 20-m section of alternating micritic limestones and marls crops out here. Individual beds are between 0·1 and 0·2m thick, occasionally reaching 0·3 m, and they vary in colour from reddish pink to off-white. The echinoids come from marly layers in the lowest seven metres of section, and are most commonly encountered at the contact between marls and limestones.

• Some 40 specimens, many of them virtually complete, were found by two amateur collectors, Mr Walter Paredi and Mr Piero Conca. These are now deposited in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano (MSNM)
