Trail Canyon, Panamint Mountains (Loc. 2 of Elliott and Ilyes 1996) (Devonian of the United States)

Where: Inyo County, California (36.3° N, 117.0° W: paleocoordinates 27.8° S, 58.5° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Lippincott Member (Lost Burro Formation), Late/Upper Emsian (402.5 - 391.9 Ma)

• The vertebrate-bearing unit was regarded as forming part of the lower part of the Lippincott Member of the Lost Burro Formation by Snow (1990), a correlation also supported by this study... The lithologic and stratigraphic differences between the two units suggest that the vertebrate-bearing unit is a variant of the lower part of the Lippincott Member.

•Elliott 2016: "A late Emsian age (inversus-serotinus Zones) is suggested for this unit based on conodont data and lithostratigraphy (Johnson et al., 1988)."

Environment/lithology: estuary or bay; dolomitic, cherty/siliceous sandstone and dolomitic siltstone

• The vertebrate-bearing unit is characterized by interbedded dolomitic siltstones and sandstones, quartzite, and pebble conglomerates with clasts of dolomite. Some nodular chert is also present.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression

Reposited in the FMNH
