Lithology description: the gosport sand is a deposit of early late eocene (bartonian) age, and consists of 2-10m of extremely fossiliferous, unconsolidated, glauconitic, calcareous quartz sand, with occasional indurated ledges and thin lenses of carbonaceous shale and lignite.
