Regional section:Orleans
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: Five late Quaternary stratigraphic units are exposed at the Lake Carmel borrow pit. These in ascending order are : 1) deltaic equivalents of Deweyville terrace alluvium (Wisconsin); 2) a buried soil zone, "Little Woods paleosol" (late Wisconsin-early (Pleistocene); 3) bay-sound clay, "Michoud Formation" (middle Holocene); 4) barrier bar sand of the New Orleans trend (middle Holocene); 5) St Bernard prodeltaic and delta front deposits (late Holocene). This collection is from the basal Barrier Bar unit (New Orleans trend). The Michoud Formation grades upward into a thin discontinous clayey sand containing abundant mollusk shells. This clayey sand unit forms the bottom of a locally, shelly, fine to coarse sand unit containing numerous burrow systems. Radiocarbon dates on peat collected from this unit yield dates of 11,090 and 29,860 years, although most authors consider the unit to have accumulated between 4-5,000 years ago. The unit is 1.5m thick. The collection comes from depth 6.0-6.3 m
