Stratigraphy
Local bed: | Tetiou 1 lower faunal horizon
Local order: | bottom to top
Regional section: | Dacic Basin
Stratigraphy comments: Late Pliocene, just before the Olduvai event (based on palaeomagnetism). Faunal comparison indicates that the Lower Faunal Horizon (Tetoiu 1) correlates with the upper part of the Khaprov faunal complex, upper MN17 (St Vallier Zone), probably equivalent to the Tiglian warm stage.
Site is about 98m below the top of the section, and consists of a succession of sands 1m thick, fossil remains come from the base of these sands. |
Lithology and environment
Includes fossils? | Y |
Lithology description: A succession of sands 1m thick, fossil remains come from the base of these sands.
Environment: | fluvial-lacustrine indet. |
Geology comments: The lower faunal horizon is in an approximately 20m thick bed consisting 'predominantly of silty sands and sand, levels with gravels and larger pebbles were also observed. These beds are rich in faunal remains.'
'The beds have an average dip of 1 to 2 degrees SE.' |
Taphonomy
Size of fossils: | macrofossils |
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods: | field collection |
Reason for describing collection: | biostratigraphic analysis |
Taxonomic list comments:Trogontherium dacium was originally described as a subspecies of T. boisvilletti, but is regarded as a separate species in this publication. |
